Description

The Random Grid node is an enhanced version of Maya's original grid node. Line and filler width can be adjusted separately. 3 texturable filler colors can be spread randomly across the grid. The seed value that initializes the random function is animatable. You can texture map this attribute to animate only part of the grid. By mapping the color gain (i.e. with a bulge or repeated ramp shader) you can alter the default square grid filler shape.

A second integrated random function can be used to animate the brightness of each filler color over time. The intensity can be adjusted individually per filler color.

You can use this node to texture map flashing lights on a control panel or create randomly lit windows of a skyline by night. You can also map nice random bump effects like cobblestones by lowering the line width and mapping e.g. a 2d fractal to the uv offset attributes.

Installation

  • Copy the file "randomGrid.mll" to your "mayax.x/bin/plug-ins" folder.
  • Copy the "AErandomGridTemplate.mel" file to your "mayax.x/scripts/AEtemplates" folder.
  • Open the Plug-in Manager and load the plug-in.

Attributes

  • Line Color
Choose the line color for the grid.
  • Filler Color 1 - 3
Choose up to 3 filler colors for the grid.
  • Threshold 1 - 3
Set the threshold value (0.0 - 1.0) for each filler color. This value must be exceeded by the random number generated for each grid field to use the appropriate filler color. If the random value falls below all three threshold values the Line Color will be used.
  • Seed
Set the initial seed value for the random function. The seed value can be texture mapped to apply a different value to certain regions of the texture. This can be used to animate the filler color only for a part of the grid.
  • Contrast
Change the contrast of the Line and Filler colors.
  • UV Line Width
Set the grid line width in u and v direction.
  • UV Filler Width
Set the grid filler width in u and v direction.
  • UV Offset
Offset the grid in u and v direction.
  • Intensity 1 - 3
These attributes define the amount of change of the filler color brightness, when animating the filler color over time.
  • Speed
Use this value to set the randomization speed of the filler color brightness over time.
  • Time
The time input attribute. Connect an expression or animation curve to this attribute to set the time for this node.
  • UV Bias
Use these attributes to decrease the filler width in u and/or v direction without altering the grid shape. You can achieve nice wipe effects when animating this attribute or change the square filler shape by applying another texture node.

Examples

The following image shows 3 examples using a Random Grid node.
This movie demonstrates the effects achieved by animating the color,  threshold and time attributes. The glow effect was added afterwards in Maya Fusion 3.0.
