Bubble Actor
The spot is based on a hero bubble that guides the viewer through the scene. In the beginning it bounces on surfaces that are not recognizable as part of a mobile phone. Over time the camera moves further away and slowly reveals a clearer view of the phone. In the end the phone is fully visible and the bubble disappears.
Modeling & Texturing
For modelling Marco used a real Samsung U-700 as reference. He took photos of the phone to get the right scaling and detail. These photos were also used as texture reference. Because of the extreme close-up shots the model had to be highly detailed. First Marco did a quick animatic with lores polygon geometry. Once animation and camera were finished he started to model the hires phone. Each shot was created as a separate set. Knowing the camera angles he was able to add detail where required which saved a lot of time.
Shading & Lighting
It was extremly difficult to find the right look for the close up shots because we did not want to reveal the surfaces are part of a mobile phone. It had to look different but still real and match the look of the phone shown later. The very first shots rather look like parts of a space ship or car. We progressively changed the look from shot to shot to match the final phone. To light the scene we used Maya's standard light sources and reflection planes to get a shinier and highly reflective look.
