This commercial is about Jack the car jack who is going on a journey to find a new Renault Symbol.

Shading, Lighting & Rendering

Kay started to work early on this job to find the right look and lighting technique for Jack. He finally used Maya and Mental Ray shaders to create the right material properties. Kay and Adrian Cruceru lit the scenes with standard Maya lighting tools. For indirect lighting he used GI maps based on HDRI images in addition to spotlights. He rendered multiple layers and passes to be able to tweak the outcome in compositing. Final compositing was done by Dan Charbit in Shake.

Matte Painting

In two shots Kay and Dan cleaned background elements that were damaged on the original film set. They created matte painting layers for compositing to fix the backplate footage from the set.
